Castro dos Três Rios
In 1934, José Coelho published one of his most important discoveries for the study of the Roman occupation of this region: the “Written Stone” in Castro dos Três Rios.
This hillfort is located in a mountainous area where the Pavia, Asnes, and Ribeira de Sasse rivers meet, on the border of the municipalities of Viseu and Tondela. On two large rocks, this researcher found an inscription made by two Romans, Lucius Manlius and Ceio (?) Tureius, dedicated to a local indigenous deity called Peinticis.
The Roman citizens belonged to the Emilia tribe, the only known mention of a tribe in the entire area of the civitas of Viseu.
Peinticis would have been the deity of this place, where there would have been a central sanctuary related to four other peoples that made up the regional ethnic group.
