Roman Votive Altar of Pena Verde
Some archaeological pieces that José Coelho studied were given to him. This is the case of an interesting granite altar from the 2nd century AD, originating from Soutinho, parish of Pena Verde, municipality of Aguiar da Beira, which was given to him in 1932 by Prior António Augusto d’Almeida Coelho.
This unique monument represents a domestic altar (lararium), where there is a dedication to the protective deity (Genio) of an individual named Cornelius. We can also observe the design of an anchor, which seems to allude to Providence, a virtue linked early on in Hispania to the imperial cult.
We can thus imagine this monument in the atrium of the villa, embedded in a wall, where the pater and his family practiced pietas for their gods and ancestors.
