Roman Milestones
In his relentless search for traces of the past, José Coelho was always attentive to the construction work taking place in the city of Viseu, looking at ruined houses, haystacks, etc. It was in this way that he discovered some Roman-era milestones, reused in buildings, both in Viseu and in the surrounding areas.
On May 1st, 1925, along with his students, he discovered in Moselos, near Viseu, a milestone for the construction of a vine pillar. Aware of the importance of the discovery, José Coelho spent 210 escudos on its acquisition. Shortly after, on October 31st, 1926, he discovered another milestone, also in Moselos, to serve as a support for a porch of a house.
The discovery and study of these milestones allowed José Coelho to demonstrate the importance that Viseu had as the capital of the civitas (more or less equivalent to a current district) during the Roman Era.
The milestones are cylindrical stone columns that were placed on the main Roman roads, indicating miles (1 mile = 1480 meters) and the emperor who ordered them to be built or repaired.
